Bollywood singer Krishnakumar Kunnath, popularly known as KK, has died while holding a concert. The police also investigated the case.
Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal said that there was no situation where participants lacked space at Nazrul Manch during singer KK's performance on Wednesday, 1 June 2022.
Goyal said police were taking steps to prevent overcrowding and providing emergency medical assistance if needed.
"Overcrowding may exist to some extent, but there is no situation where people lack space or sweat or have problems with (other) people," he said.
He said KK arrived at Nazrul Manch at 18:22 local time and took the stage at 19:05 local time.
"He was never mobbed, we had quite a police presence in the place," Goyal said.
He also said that the police arrangement under the assistant commissioner was in place long before the singer's arrival.
Goyal emphatically said that there was no such situation as overcrowding at any point in time and there was plenty of room for the audience to watch the show comfortably.
He continued that the organizers, artists, musicians on stage or the crowd never alerted the police that something was wrong. The exact number of people present cannot be ascertained as at various points in time the number will differ.
"We ask for further medical ambulances to be kept with doctors and hospitals to be identified where people can be taken in case of an emergency," Goyal said.
Goyal said that it must be ensured that tickets should not be distributed more than the seating capacity of a place.
"We put in place mechanisms to ensure this process," he further said.
Goyal explained that the incident of using the fire extinguisher occurred outside the hall and was about 150 meters away. It is suspected that fire extinguishers were used to disperse the crowd who tried to force their way into the hall to attend the KK show.
"There was a small fight between some people trying to get on stage and that's when I think someone used this fire extinguisher. They separated the people and the situation was brought under control immediately," he said.
